SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change

A new site-specific installation has opened in Millennium Park as part of SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change: Re-SPLAM (Reclaimed Spatial Laminated) Timber Pavilion, a full-scale structure by SOM, created in partnership with Washington University in St. Louis, Norcon, and MACRC. Constructed with pieces of locally reclaimed lumber salvaged from homes across Chicago, the pavilion introduces an alternative spatial laminated timber system that eliminates the need for newly manufactured material while extending the carbon storage of existing wood.

Guided by a custom digital script that determines the placement of each salvaged piece, Re-SPLAM highlights how fabrication and structural innovation can support meaningful material reuse. Positioned prominently in the South Boeing Gallery in Millennium Park, the pavilion offers a clear, forward-looking example of low-carbon construction and new possibilities for sustainable architectural practice.
